Jean McConnell served his community with dignity

I just came back from Jean McConnell's funeral. I am glad I had the opportunity to work with Jean on the council, even if it was only for a short time. I feel regret for the opportunity I missed to learn more from him. I never told him (because maybe it's rude?) but he reminded me a lot of my own grandfather. He really served this community, always trying to look out for the "little guy"--and he could be very serious about it, but then in the next second he would tell a joke and flash a smile.

The City's 2006 budget hearings will take place the week of December 12th. From 3:30-7:00PM in Rm 104 at City Hall, the council will have a series of discussions. On December 19th, the amount for the budget must be set (after the Truth in Taxation hearing) and a levy will be certified. To learn more about the budget process, come to City Hall for one or more sessions.

Please check the City's websites for updates on the meeting times.

November 21 City Council Meeting

Last night, the council voted on whether or not to reverse the decision to allow Linens-N-Things a third wall sign.

Council overrides mayor's first veto http://news.postbulletin.com/newsmanager/templates/localnews_story.asp?a=238804

Recently, the council enacted a new ordinance to limit to two the number of signs that a business can have. Linens-N-Things had made the decision to locate to the Apache Shops before the ordinance took effect. Winkel Electric, appearing on behalf of Linens, applied for the sign permit afterwards. Should they be allowed the third sign because they "thought" that it would be allowed when they moved in? Should they be allowed the third sign because the City had not sent notice of the change?
