Notice is hereby given that the Rochester Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on Monday, February 7, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council/Board Chambers of the Government Center, 151 4th Street SE, Rochester, MN.

The purpose of this hearing will be to consider the following:

  • Type III, Phase I, Variance Request #06-32 by Magic Media to allow for an advertising sign which exceeds the permitted square footage by 240 square feet. The existing advertising sign is located along the north side of Highway 14 west and just west of TH 52.
  • Type III, Phase I, Variance Request R2007-001VAR by the Rochester Civic Theatre to allow for a sign that does not meet the lighting standards for internally lit signs directly abutting or across the street from a Residential Zoning District. The property is located at 20 Civic Center Dr SE and is in the CDC-CBD (Central Development Core – Central Business District) Zoning District.
  • Type III, Phase I, Variance Request R2007-002VAR by Magic Media to rebuild and enlarge an advertising sign that does not meet the separation distance between advertising signs. The distance between advertising sign would be about 890 feet where the Zoning Ordinance requirement is 1,000 feet. The proposed advertising sign location is the spot where the existing advertising sign is along the south side of 37th Street NW, west of the Zumbro River and east of the Hy-vee gas station.

The citizens of Rochester and SE Minnesota are invited to attend a free forum on global warming, its impacts, and its solutions. Congressman Tim Walz will share his perspectives on this issue and update attendees on what is happening in Congress in the new session. Dr. Lee Frelih and J. Drake Hamilton will speak about the impacts of global warming on Minnesota’s treasured Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and what action individuals and legislators can take to address climate change. Local groups are sponsoring tables at the event.

A series of 12 weekly classes structured to help family members understand and support their ill relative while maintaining their own well-being begins on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, 6-8:30 p.m. at United Way Building, 903 West Center Street.

The course is taught by a team of trained family members who know what it is like to have a loved one with a serious mental illness in the family.

There is no cost to participate in this program, but registration is required. The class is limited to 20 persons. Please call the NAMI Olmsted County office at 287-1692 for more details or to register.

The Honors Choirs of Southeast Minnesota invites you to celebrate its 15th anniversary season at this year’s Voices concert!

All five choirs, over 285 singers, will lift their voices and demonstrate the proud choral tradition for which Honors Choirs is known. These young people in grades three through twelve come from 26 different area communities, and their repertoire includes music from around the world and from the Renaissance to the present. This year’s concert will be followed by an anniversary reception.

The Rochester Regional Science Fair events scheduled for Thursday and Friday, March 1-2, have been postponed to Tuesday, March 6. Science Fair projects will be presented at the National Volleyball Center on the Century High School campus, 2601 Viola Road NE.

The Science Fair awards ceremony will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. in the John Adams Middle School, (1525 31st Street NW).

The public is invited to attend.
