Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED - pronounced sep-ted) CPTED is a crime control philosophy that attempts to apply physical design, citizen participation and law enforcement strategies in a comprehensive way to protect facilities or neighborhoods. The goal of CPTED is to reduce the opportunity for crime to occur. It is a series of design principles that, when properly employed, serve to eliminate criminal behavior and improve the quality of life through the reduction of fear of crime. This reduction in criminal opportunities is achieved by employing physical design features and space management strategies that discourage criminal activity, while at the same time encouraging the legitimate use of the location. | ||

Camp Jornada Foundation's mission is to provide free camp programs for children faced with cancer and a year-round support network for these children and their families. American Wetlands Month is here! The month of May is set aside every year to celebrate some of our most valued national treasures – wetland ecosystems. Rochester’s wetlands provide us many important services: they help recharge our drinking water supplies, they provide wildlife habitat, and they remove nutrients and other pollutants from contaminated water. Wetlands need our help. If you would like to volunteer time to help remove invasive species from a Rochester wetland, contact Barb Huberty of the Rochester Public Works Department (529-4907) to find out how you can help. If you would like to learn more about wetlands, join the Audubon Wetland Watch on Saturday, May 19 from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Eastside Wildlife Management Area. Audubon volunteers will be present on the viewing platform to help people learn about wetlands and the wildlife that inhabit them. Binoculars and telescopes will be available for those who need them. Eastside Wildlife Management Area is located on Olmsted County Road 9, about 4 miles east of downtown Rochester, just before the railroad crossing. Start: 9:30 am

Rally for Conservation Wants You and Your Boat at the Capitol Parade Assembly starts 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2007. Bring your duck boat, canoe, fishing boat or anything else that will identify yourself as a concerned outdoors enthusiast or conservationist to the Capitol on Saturday, May 19, 2007. As you have heard, our legislators are locked in a struggle over many budgetary issues. The session is scheduled to end on Sunday, May 20th. Despite the promises we have received, the proposed bill to put dedicated funding for conservation and clean water on the ballot is still in "limbo" at the capitol. The political struggles over other issues threatens to sideline the struggle to preserve our natural resources. Start: 10:00 am

Rochester Public Schools is preparing for a fall bond referendum to fund the construction of a new elementary school in NW Rochester. Because it is against state law to use District funds to promote a yes vote on the referendum, part of this process is the organization of a citizens’ volunteer committee to run the advocacy campaign. The District anticipates a Board decision on the referendum date in June. The committee would formally organize after the Board decision and would then begin planning for a campaign to ramp up some time in August. There would be long-term leadership opportunities as well as opportunities for volunteers interested in helping out with a single task.  Preparation is under way for the 10th Annual Med-City Kids' Marathon. Changes have been made this year to encourage greater participation, so let's have a team from every elementary and middle school! It's a great way to help students set goals and get physically fit. Students in grades 1-8 train by completing 25 miles (a little at a time) prior to the event. They complete a marathon distance by running the remaining 1.2 miles on event day. | ||
