Rochester Public Schools is preparing for a fall bond referendum to fund the construction of a new elementary school in NW Rochester. Because it is against state law to use District funds to promote a yes vote on the referendum, part of this process is the organization of a citizens’ volunteer committee to run the advocacy campaign.

The District anticipates a Board decision on the referendum date in June. The committee would formally organize after the Board decision and would then begin planning for a campaign to ramp up some time in August. There would be long-term leadership opportunities as well as opportunities for volunteers interested in helping out with a single task. The time commitment would vary depending on a person’s role in the committee. The likely timeframe for the referendum is late September.

The hostess even dressed for the part, complete with red, white, and blue shoes in honor of National Night Out.

Viva Cuba

Viva Cuba (Drama / Cuba; Spanish with English sub-titles)

In a tale akin to “Romeo and Juliet,” the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ differences. Malú is from an upper-class family and her single mother does not want her to play with Jorgito, as she thinks his background coarse and commonplace. Jorgito’s mother, a poor socialist proud of her family’s social standing, places similar restrictions on her son. What neither woman recognizes is the immense strength of the bond between Malú and Jorgito. When the children learn that Malú’s mother is planning to leave Cuba, they decide to travel to the other side of the island to find Malú’s father and persuade him against signing the forms that would allow it. The iFilm series is intended for mature adults. Please provide guidance to your children. Admission is free.
