- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross) has released a Workplaces on the Move request for proposals to help Minnesota employers encourage better health among their employees by increasing physical activity. Blue Cross will select up to 20 small to mid-size Minnesota employers in 2007 to receive three-year contracts that will range from $25,000 to $100,000 depending on the size of the company. - The third annual Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) Forum is scheduled for May 2, 2007. It is titled Sharing Success Stories: Moving from Planning to Action. The forum will be held at the University of Minnesota Continuing Education and Conference Center in St. Paul. The forum will provide workshop sessions and round-table discussions that share ideas and strategies to help successfully implement school wellness policies. - Two one-day workshops on Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping will be held on May 31 and June 1, 2007. The workshops are titled Mapping Minnesota Communities Workshop: An Introduction to GIS and Community Analysis. Each workshop will be held at the New Horizons Computer Learning Center in Edina. - The Physical Activity and Public Health Course (PAPH) sponsored by the University of South Carolina Prevention Research Center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention features an 8-day Postgraduate Course on Research Directions and Strategies and a 6-day Practitioner's Course on Community Interventions. The faculties for the courses are composed of nationally recognized experts in public health research and practice. The Research Course serves post-doctoral personnel and is designed to develop research competencies related to physical activity and public health. The Practitioner's Course is for those professionally involved or interested in community-based initiatives to promote physical activity. The 2007 Physical Activity and Public Health Courses will be held September 11-19, 2007 at The Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is pleased to announce the creation of two new awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA) and the Community Leadership Award (CLA). These awards were established by the Council to recognize the contributions many Americans have made to promote or enhance physical activity, fitness, or sports in this country. With a focus on recognizing individuals who have made a national impact, the LAA serves to thank men and women who have dedicated their lives and their careers to improving the health of individuals and groups nationwide. Up to six LAAs will be presented each year. The CLA will recognize up to 50 individuals nationwide who have made a local impact in their State, community, club, or organization. Applications must be received by April 1, 2007. Award winners will be recognized in May National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. For more information, visit www.fitness.gov.
- The National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has a new falls prevention Campaign for seniors. It's called "Don't let gravity be your downfall." The campaign is designed to help America's seniors stay on their feet and free of injury.
