What
Historic Southwest neighbors, Rochester area youth, and staff members at the Edison Administration building will work together to create a colorful, abstract flowery street mural, transforming public space into a neighborhood asset.

This mural is the second new mural to hit Rochester neighborhood streets this summer. The first goose-themed mural [1] was applied at an intersection between the Northrop Community Education Building and Goose Egg Park. Last year's pilot RColorful Corners project [2] in the Slatterly Park Neighborhood will be given a fresh coat of paint and birghtened up this summer as well.

Why
Without spending a single tax dollar, this grassroots project creates a safer and more livable neighborhood by:

  • Bringing neighbors together to create art
  • Reclaiming public space as a place for community connections
  • Calming traffic speed

Come out and join in this free event!

The street paint [3] was awarded through a Picture it Painted grant RNeighbors applied for through the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) [4]. The paint is provided by Valspar [5] and is street paint. This type of paint is used to paint lines on roads and contains a gritty non-skid additive, that ensures additional safety to motorists and pedestrians. Many community partners and sponsors [6] came forward to make this event possible.

Local mural artist Greg Wimmer will be hard at work early in the morning to chalk out the image for volunteers to paint. An event flyer can be printed off here [7].

Just wear your painting clothes and show up for the fun.

  • Free event T-shirts (sponsored by the Community Education Advisory Board and local consignment shops Kismet) will be given to the first 100 attendees.

Even if you aren’t able to paint or don’t live in this neighborhood, we’d love to have you present. This is an official Rochester Year of the Family [8] event, all ages are welcome and encouraged to get involved.
