The 7th Annual Walk for Thought

Did you know a brain injury occurs every 23 seconds? Or, can you believe the number of people who annually sustain a brain injury is six times greater than the total number of new multiple sclerosis, HIV and breast cancer cases combined? Yet, brain injury is often overlooked and therefore makes it a silent epidemic.

In 1984 a small group of families and providers came together to form what is now the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota. It was a grassroots effort to advocate for services at a time when resources were limited at best for persons with brain injury and their families. Today it is still the only statewide nonprofit organization in Minnesota devoted solely to serving the needs of the estimated 100,000 Minnesotans (12,000 children and young adults) who live with disability due to brain injury, their families and the professionals who work with them.

Join children and adults around the world in the celebration of International Walk and Bike to School Day!

We walk rain or shine!

Use the walk to school to:

Get to know your neighbors
Research has shown that people living on quiet roads know more of their neighbors than people living on busy streets.
Respect your streets
People are less likely to litter their own backyard. Walking to school regularly gives children a "sense of place", making the streets better for everyone!
Find a route to school
Walk with your children and explore the area to find the safest way to school, avoiding busy main roads and using quieter side roads with sidewalks.
Get to know your neighborhood
Developing a mental map of the area is an important part of growing up and gaining confidence in an area.
Practice life skills
Use Walk and Bike to School Day to learn personal safety skills and practice using proper pedestrian and bike safety rules.
Start a walking/biking habit
If you walk or bike to school every day for a month, it will become a habit - and you won't want to go back to driving!
