About CAPS
In September 2009, at the RNeighbors annual fundraiser RLuau, a conversation about public safety concerns took place. Following this, Neighbors for Safety was brought together, made up of leaders from the Cimarron, Historic Southwest, Kutzky Park, Eastside, and Slatterly Park neighborhood associations, business leader Joe Powers, and RNeighbors served as the organizing entity.
Several community input meetings were held. Neighbors for Safety (NfS) volunteers continued meeting monthly. Solutions were discussed to address problems. Working towards solutions, facts about the current crime situation were gathered, interviews of City departments made, and action items developed.
Among other focus areas, the group consistently became aware that there was limited opportunities for interaction between city departments and the public to address public safety issues. That is where the idea for Citizen Advisors for Public Safety (CAPS) developed from. We first met with Police Chief Peterson, who was favorable to the idea and then the City Council recognized the CAPS group at a May 2009 meeting.
NfS solicited volunteer applications for CAPS, and developed drafts of by-laws, vision, mission and goals for the new group so they had a firm foundation to start with as NfS morphed into CAPS.
The first CAPS meeting was held on Thursday, October 7, 6:30 pm. CAPS meetings are open to the public.
If you would like to communicate a public safety concern about your neighborhood to the CAPS group please include the following information and email it to RNeighbors. It’s always a good idea to include your City Council representative in communications about your neighborhood.
