A Litter Bit Better! Dates Extended to April 27

A Litter Bit Better! Dates Extended to April 27

Have you noticed the blue and green bags piling up in your neighborhood?

The 5th Annual Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better! event is well underway with hundreds of citizens collecting trash and recyclables from all corners of Rochester.  Snow is falling and may hinder the efforts of the over 3,200 registered volunteers.   Organizers want to encourage participants to proceed with their clean-ups, and now they have a few more days to do so.  The program has been extended to Wednesday, April 27th, instead of Saturday the 23rd.

If you haven’t yet registered, there is still time!  You can find information, maps and more on our website.  If you have registered and are changing your pick-up date, simply call Mike K. at 507-254-8169 to let him know where your bags are located when you are done.  You can indicate your date change on your post-event survey.

The Trash Mountain weigh-in event will now take place at Waste Management (6670 11th Ave SW Rochester) 9am Thursday, April 28th.  Media are invited to attend and share in the big reveal of this year’s numbers.

Survey results so far indicate that the average group or individual spends about 1.5 hours doing their collection.  Some of the more interesting finds so far include a baby car seat, some house siding, a broken sled, and multiple car parts.  One volunteer said they were hoping to find a $100 bill…no luck.   Many groups report finding less litter at their sites this year, which is one of the goals of the program.

There are now 20 Rochester businesses who have voluntarily signed up for the new Litter Bit Better Business Partnership program.  These businesses realize the importance of a clean community and have taken steps to manage the waste of their staff and customers.
