2017 Neighborhood Project Grant Results

2017 was the third year of our Neighborhood Project Grants. Once again there were strong applications with some original ideas from neighborhoods on how to bring neighbors together, while getting positive things accomplished for their living space. These grants reimburse up to $1,000 in costs for neighborhoods to complete projects that enhance a neighborhood’s livability and involvement, benefit the entire neighborhood and promote a strong sense of community. Rochester’s urban forest needs your help to plant some trees in the Viking Hills Park NE Rochester neighborhood. On Oct. 14 we’ll be planting 200 trees on the bouvlards of Tundra Lane, Heritage Place, Heartland Ave, and Ashland Lane NW. Tree types to be planted include Sugar and Red Maples, Ohio Buckeye, Service berry, Catalpa, Hackberry, Hawthorn, Gingko, Honey Locust , Kentucky Coffee, Ironwood, Pin and Bur Oak, American Linden and Hybrid elm. Due to possible storms, the East Park tree planting has been postponed until Tuesday, October 10, at 4:30 pm. All other information remains the same as detailed below. In February, Minnesota will host the Super Bowl, but on Tuesday, October 3, from 4:30-6 pm, Rochester will kick-off the celebration with a tree planting in East Park (1738 E Center St, Rochester, MN 55904) that is funded through a Super Bowl LII Urban Forestry Grant. Photo: The Kutzky Park Neighbors came out on Tuesday, September 27, to add some green leafy trees to their boulevards. This effort was done in several shifts of neighbors who got the last tree in the ground just prior to a dark, rain storm. Trees make good neighbors. Since its creation in 2004, RNeighborWoods has organized 6,206 volunteers to plant 7,030 trees on Rochester boulevards. 2017 was the 11th annual Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better! event. Each year, thousands of volunteers collect litter from across Rochester. Together in the past 11 years, these individuals, service groups, businesses, scout troops, faith-based organizations, neighborhood associations, and families have worked together to remove over 131.4 tons of litter from the community.
