CUDE Announces 2011 Award Winners

The Rochester Committee on Urban Design and Environment (CUDE) is pleased to announce the winners of its twenty-fourth annual merit awards. These individuals, businesses, and organizations, and their projects, are being recognized for their outstanding environmental, functional, and aesthetic improvements to our community. The winners were honored at a breakfast on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Mayo Civic Center.

The recipients are:

Community Site Enhancement: Art on the Ave

Slatterly Park Neighborhood festival that adds sculptures to the boulevards (pictured above)

Community Site Enhancement: Market Strasse

Winter marketplace that brings a taste of a European Christmas to the Peace Plaza

Environmental Innovation or Conservation: Olmsted County 2122 Building Parking Lot Rain Gardens

Functional landscaping that adds beauty to a parking lot while managing storm water

Environmental Innovation or Conservation: Public Works Transit Operations Center

Use of innovative on-site storm water management and other green design techniques at a public facility

Landscaping: 2nd Street SW

A greening of one of Rochester’s main thoroughfares, providing amenities to the pedestrian while enhancing a gateway to the downtown

Landscaping: Riverside Gardens

Slatterly Park Neighborhood volunteers team up to landscape the entrance to Riverside Elementary and the neighborhood  (pictured above)

Landscaping: Samaritan Bethany

Rain gardens and other functional landscaping features serve the environment as well as the residents

New Construction – Institutional: 2nd Street Transit Hub

Form and function combine to create a stunning centerpiece for downtown transit

New Construction – Institutional: 4th Street SE Bridge

Design features accommodate motorists and pedestrians while adding life and color to the streetscape

New Construction – Institutional: Southeastern Minnesota Center for Independent Living

Infill development that combines sustainable building practices with physical accessibility for those who need it most
